Hall of GIFs
Co-creator, 2016
In celebration of the Internet Archive’s 20th anniversary, librarians at NCSU created an open-source program to ingest and display hundreds of animated GIFs from Geocities websites at a time, at random. The result is an immersive experience that exposes the creativity of early web design and the cultural diversity that thrived within fan and interest websites.
Public Displays

The public was invited to enter our version of Thomas Edison’s Black Maria studio and “give us a kiss” on camera, just like May Irwin and John C. Rice did for Thomas Edison Co. 120 years ago. The newly recorded videos were projected in the gallery alongside the original 1896 film, all set to playful kiss-themed music, and became part of a final video work that mixed Edison’s original film with the kisses recorded during the Public Displays installation at Flanders Gallery.
